Clean Hands, Clean Heart...

3/22/2020...  I dreamed I was in church, next in line for Communion, shocked to see the older woman in front of me rudely grabbing at the host which the priest held high and away from her hands… Then it was my turn to receive the Eucharist, but with the ‘Mass hysteria’ over COVID-19, I was afraid… that either my hands or the priest’s were not clean enough to put the Eucharist on my tongue. Fearfully, I received the host on my tongue… and woke up…

As I lay there pondering the meaning of this dream, the interpretation began to take shape… I began to sense the brutish woman represented an increasingly aggressive, older but none the wiser world with unclean hands and irreverent hearts… The priest, for his part, represented the Church... on the one hand protecting the woman from herself (1 Cor. 11:27) '...whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord' ...but on the other hand making it too hard for her to receive the body of Christ, since the woman herself is responsible for examining her own conscience (1 Cor. 11:28) 'Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.'

Later that morning, sentenced to house arrest with the rest of the world, I decided to watch the Mass online… During the Eucharist and sacramental breaking of bread, I thought ‘How sad no one can receive Communion…’ I quickly heard in my spirit ‘Let it be on your tongue…’ and remembered my dream where I received the host on my tongue.  Then it hit me.  ‘...Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ Matt.4:4.

‘Let it be on your tongue…’

As we solemnly enter Holy Week under ‘Mass quarantine' for God only knows how long, may we, the Church, let His Word be on our tongues as the spiritual food we need... and with cleaner than ever hands and hearts humbly receive the Body of Christ. +++
